Procedure Preparation Instructions

At Tulsa Gastroenterology, we want every procedure to be as safe and effective as possible. Proper preparation is essential for successful outcomes. Below are general preparation guidelines for our commonly performed procedures. Please follow the specific instructions provided by our team prior to your appointment.

1. Endoscopy Preparation

Purpose: Examines the upper GI tract (esophagus, stomach, and duodenum).

Preparation Steps:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6–8 hours before the procedure.

  • Avoid gum, hard candy, or smoking the day of the procedure.

  • Inform your physician of any medications, especially blood thinners or diabetes meds.

  • Arrange for someone to drive you home after the procedure due to sedation.

2. Colonoscopy Preparation

Purpose: Examines the large intestine (colon) for polyps, inflammation, or other issues.

Preparation Steps:

  • Follow a clear liquid diet the day before your procedure.

  • Avoid red or purple liquids.

  • Take the prescribed bowel prep medication as directed.

  • Nothing to eat or drink after midnight before the procedure.

  • Arrange transportation due to sedation during the procedure.

3. Esophageal Dilation Preparation

Purpose: Treats narrowing of the esophagus to make swallowing easier.

Preparation Steps:

  • Do not eat or drink anything for at least 6 hours before the procedure.

  • Notify your doctor of any medications, allergies, or existing conditions.

  • Sedation will be used—plan to have someone accompany you home.

  • Follow all instructions regarding stopping medications such as anticoagulants.

4. Feeding Tube Insertion (PEG) Preparation

Purpose: Placement of a percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube for nutritional support.

Preparation Steps:

  • No food or drink for at least 8 hours before the procedure.

  • Inform the doctor of all medications and medical conditions.

  • You may need lab tests or imaging before the procedure.

  • Sedation will be used—arrange for post-procedure transportation and assistance.

5. Capsule Endoscopy Preparation

Purpose: A pill-sized camera captures images of the small intestine.

Preparation Steps:

  • Fast for at least 12 hours before swallowing the capsule.

  • You may need a liquid diet the day before, depending on your doctor’s instructions.

  • Avoid strenuous activity and keep the data recorder on you at all times.

  • Follow all instructions regarding when to resume eating and drinking after capsule ingestion.
